Update!

See here for info and photos of the second Glossop Snowcock!

(This post is mainly about the original one)

As some of you may be aware, the town I live in, Glossop has been experiencing quite heavy snow fall over the past few days.

Glossop is famed for being mildly bizarre, a stereotype exacerbated and exploited by dark comedy series, The League of Gentlemen, filmed in the nearby village of Hadfield

In Norfolk square, right in the centre of Glossop, the formal square where the war memorial is, a snow sculpture was erected. This was not any old snow sculpture, it was not a snowman.

This was an 8 foot model of a penis...

Not a bad sculpture either. Whilst some did not see its artistic merits, this was an expertly crafted masterpiece, complete with testicles, veins etc, right there in the centre of Glossop for all to see.

Thanks to the magic of digital photography and the fantastic work of @colincampbell2 and @custardcat we can take a look!

The monument has since been demolished, however a number of questions remain:

  • Who built it?
  • What/who was the inspiration?
  • What does the sculpture represent?
  • Whom was the sculpture dedicated to?

If you think you know an answer, please leave a comment.

Hmmmm, it appears that a couple of 26 year olds have laid claim to the original snowcock in the Chronicle.

Anonymous Fool (not verified) | Mon, 25/01/2010 - 16:57

I suspect the truth is that both groups were involved.

I suspect that the teenagers started and then went on to the party they were going to. The 20+ crowd then rolled down and finished it off.

Neither party wants to acknowledge the other group.

I've probably got it wrong, but it was something like that!

Long live SNOWCOCK!

tdobson | Mon, 25/01/2010 - 22:50

how about a snow vagina? then you can have lots of baby snowmen next year..

Anonymous Fool (not verified) | Mon, 11/01/2010 - 14:41

we thought about how we would make something like that and decided that it would be too much work xD

TheTaylor (not verified) | Wed, 20/01/2010 - 19:41

well, i have no idea who u frauds are...but u must be smacked off ur tits to think it was you that built it

It was my brother, Carl Lord, and Tom Swindell that built it...they were seen building it by many people, and a lot of people know it was them who built it....so you trying to claim it was you, makes you look like the complete dick that you must be!

Hazel Coleman (not verified) | Wed, 06/01/2010 - 22:43

fail.

just major fail.

Anneeeeh (not verified) | Fri, 08/01/2010 - 00:45

and what does that prove? We were also seen by many and have photos of us making it, as in when it was half way up and then the full, the only photos of them making it seem to be when it is finished. You are talking about us being smacked of our tits when 2 26 year olds are trying to take credit for what 4 16/17 year olds did. Get a life.

i can understand some of what andy is saying,it is a shame though that the guy must be eating to much cornish pasties and playing with the pixies to realise moving away from glossop unfortunately makes you uneligable to comment on the present youth activities, you dont even live here, you visit, although i agree youths can be problematic and disruptive, mostly with boredom not HARDCORE DRUGS.Talk about being DRAMATIC andy lol.relax dude and heres a dictionary for ya next time you post pal.:)

The "great majority" of youth in Glossop are not on crack and smack. Anybody who says so (i.e "Andy")is a bigger prick than icy member in Norfolk Square. This was a wonderful use of snow, maybe the artists would consider carving one into the side of the Nab so we can enjoy it year round? I suspect the only drug involved in the creation of this masterpiece was tasty beer.

ive managed to stay off the heroin just long enough to say it was fun making it and i dont really care much about who gets the "credit" lol its a 9ft cock and we just remade one which is 14ish ft :D. im off back to my heroin now before i get the shakes.

It was Chris Taylor, Chris Smith, Elliot Garlick and James Hague.

Fail at you two 26 year olds.

GET A LIFE NOOBS.

Anneeeeh (not verified) | Wed, 06/01/2010 - 01:55

I don't know who these 26 year old guys are who claim they built the snow cock, but I can honestly say they are frauds (:
All I want to know is why they'd want to steal the limelight from a bunch of 16/17 year olds, believing their story would be more credible because they were older and had a lot of fancy things to say about the 'youth of today'?
The original artists are Chris Taylor, Chris Smith, Elliot Garlick and James Hague.
For proof of who built it, there are pictures which have been, or are to be uploaded, onto the facebook page very soon.
And some very reliable witnesses who saw it being built.
Let the real creators of the snow cock have the glory! It was their genius idea.

M (: (not verified) | Tue, 05/01/2010 - 23:47

EXACTLY M.

i hope those 2 guys are reading this right now going "shit dude. we're lame."

do you really think you could get away with just saying it was you two who built it?
sure, you have pictures, but they were of the finished piece were they not?
do you have any showing the sculpture PROGRESS?

i think not. (:

i.was.there. (not verified) | Wed, 06/01/2010 - 00:00

It was originally made my Chris Taylor, Chris Smith, James Hague and Elliott Garlick. There are pictures to prove it.

Are you trying to tell me a couple of 26 year old men are desperate enough to lie and tell people that they created it when they didn't?

You guys didn't make the original one, please get over it (:

i.was.there. (not verified) | Tue, 05/01/2010 - 23:28

me and 3 of my mates, smith hague and ell originally started building it, we got it to about 8-9 foot before we left it and heard that a lot of people carried on our work after we left.
It started when we saw someone had started rolling a snowball in the square and given up so we wanted to build a snowman, but when we were building it, well it looked more cock than man so we changed it, and well thats what we ended up with.

TheTaylor (not verified) | Tue, 05/01/2010 - 23:01

as to tims original questions...

It was built by Carl "Pear Head" Lord and Tom Swindell.

We can only say our inspiration was strong ales provided to us by the star inn.

Do I really need to tell you what it represents? It's a 9 foot cock!! :D

and if we had dedicated it to anyone... it'd have to be to high peak council for their glorious work at keeping out roads clear (and that's not a dig at the drivers... they're doing their best just the numpties behind them!)

pear (not verified) | Tue, 05/01/2010 - 14:10

How many teanage smackheads does it take to build a 9 foot snow cock?

None in fact!! Because it was actually built by 2 26 year old professionals after a jolly good seasonal beer! :D

To think that the sculpture myself and my friend built has been created by heroin addicts is simply farcical. A pair of 26 year olds cannot possibly be described as "young teenage idiots", although I think I can talk for the both of us when I say we're flattered by at least 2 parts of the comment.

I can totally understand where you're coming from with the comments but our snow cock was just a bit of fun, built late in the evening when there was no children about to offend. I really don't think it has anything to do with drug abuse or the death of Paul Beard (who was a near and dear friend killed by a gang of mid 20's from hattersley!!). I've recently come back from a fair bit of travelling and realised that no matter where you go there's drugs (try living in the Dufferin district of Toronto) and vandalism (Athens Syntagma, the main shopping street, is Full of the foulest graffiti I've seen in my life) and violence (anywhere you go in the world!) and not all of it's created by teenagers, especially our 9 foot penis!

Pear (not verified) | Tue, 05/01/2010 - 14:04

Obviousley i can see the funny side to this but having said that before moving to cornwall six years ago i had lived in the glossop area all my life and slowly watched a place that i grew up in and loved turn in to a place i no longer wanted to live in due to all the drugs, vandalism, thefts and acts of blatant violence that were fast becoming the norm, most of these offences being carried out by the young teenage idiots that were roaming the streets of Hadfield and Glossop in large gangs basicaly doing what ever they wanted to so having said that if you really want my opinion this is just one more prick amongst the many allready on the streets of yet another once quiet and much loved little town, i make return visits now and again to see family but every time i return to hadfield all i ever hear is how bad things have got, how many cars have been stolen, how many breakins there have been, how a great majority of hadfield and glossops young teenagers have turned to heroin/crack cocaine because its so easy to get in the area this obviousley leads to peoples lives being destroyed and ultimately more crime being carried out to feed their habits in the end everbody suffers, ultimately nothing will ever change for the better while the law has its head firmly planted up its arse! If you want to report on something why not report on whats being done to bring back the stocks and cat o nine tails to these once sleepy little villages and towns and when they are back in place (i believe if memory serves Broadbottam still have theirs in place although not in use) have reporters there with cameras taking photos of these people that think they can flout the law and get away with it being pelted with rotten food and whipped for their crimes NOW THAT WOULD BE SOMETHING WORTH SEEING!!!

Andy (not verified) | Sun, 27/12/2009 - 21:46

You "obviousley" do "NOT" see the funny side. I thought it was so funny I fell over and hurt my back when I took a second look. It hurt so much my husband was ready to take me to hospital. I recovered over the next five days but still made my way to work each day although still in pain from the fall.
I still laugh at what they built.
I have lived in Glossop for 40 years. I have a 21 year old Son who was born and bred in Glossop and educated at Glossopdale, he is now at University. He doesnt use Heroin as yet.
I know the town has it's problems and has changed over the years but change is something we all have to live with.
I disagree with most of your comments. I wonder how much effort you made to integrate into the community when you lived here.
I agree with you on one thing, Cornwall was the best move you ever made. With an attitude like yours it's best to be away from normality. I bet they still have some stocks in Cornwall. You could round up all the local teens but beware they dont get you first.
Remember, they dont like outsiders (you are from Glossop) they use outsiders in rituals (it leaves them more sheep to eat). They will gain your trust then start chopping off little bits of your hair, nails and eyebrows when you sleep. They mix this in a broth and pray for a resurection of some sort. It doesnt happen straight away so they sedate you and chop off bits of your manhood. They feel this necessary because the sacred lamb is already in the oven.
Holy Shit they say, it worked. As they view the Giant nobb in Norfolk Square on the internet. End of story for now.
I am not suggesting by any means that you have a "giant nobb, I am only suggesting that you are acting like one.
You didnt mince words when describing Glossop, so I have commented on Cornwall in the same manner.

Audrey (not verified) | Thu, 07/01/2010 - 03:19

"being carried out by the young teenage idiots" - hehe - remember this blog is run by "a teenage idiot"! :)

It's funny you mention how many local teenagers have turned to drugs etc that wasn't my perspective in the slightest.

ah well, I'm sure that passing your words of wisdom onto my friends will momentarily stop them looking for their next fix and doing their next line, long enough to tell you that Glossop isn't like that.

ah well, I'm out for a new years drink in Glossop tonight. The only people I'm worried that might stab me are the crazy gun-toting pensioners with sharpened umbrellas... I mean come on... ??? this isn't the Glossop I know that you're talking about.

tdobson | Thu, 31/12/2009 - 16:55

Hi Tim, i didnt say every teenager in glossop and hadfield was on drugs there are good and bad in every town and wheras you and your friends may not be partaking in illegal substance abuse there ARE definately those people that are, dont try telling me that hadfield and glossop are squeeky clean because we both know different dont we! i lived in the area for well over thirty years and watched things go down hill rapidly, i know of variouse people that have gone from smoking a bit of weed to sticking a needle in their arm, at first to to see what it was like then becoming hooked and it was so readily available they went back for more and all this started about six or so years ago when certain people started bringing the stuff in to the area and as i said in my first comment when money is tight for the users of this sort of drug other peoples belongings begin to dissapear! i was a victim of this sort of chrime when a local youth broke into my car and stole the stereo and CDs to sell to feed his habit so dont tell me it doesnt go on because it does all i can say is i genuinly hope that the local constabulary have come down hard on the dealers to the extent that it is no longer an issue or has sufficiently calmed down and with it all the breakins and thefts that were occuring when i left the area! Ime due a visit in the near future so we shall see! I would just like to point out Tim that as i said there are good and bad in all walks of life and ime not saying every teenager is up to no good but there are definately those that are like the ones that beat the poor lad outside the blues club a few years back resulting in his death!!!.....i mean come on tim...??? if your going to report on things and answear peoples comments at least do your home work, go to glossop police station and start asking questions get some honest facts and figures and try looking in the newspaper archives and take note of the crime increas over say the last seven years and take note of all the people being prosecuted for supplying and using drugs and then come back to me and tell me it doesnt happen and is not happening...and ime pretty sure your not one of those teenage idiots!!! are you???

Andy (not verified) | Sun, 03/01/2010 - 16:36

Three points I'd like to make, Andy:
1:Before you accuse teenagers of being stupid, work on your spelling and grammer.
2:If you know all of these people, what does that say about you?
3:If you've lived here for thirty years, and all this started about six years ago, that means it started when you were at least twenty four. Hence, it has become evident that it is not teenagers you are talking about.
