Howto
Howto become a semi-sucessful band or artist...
Several people I know have recently been trying to make an impression on the music industry so I thought I'd help out with a few tips for new artists and bands trying to make themselves well known.
This isn't an exhaustive list, but it will certainly help you in the right direction...
Be enthusiastic
If you would prefer to be playing football, play football - you need driving unstoppable enthusiasm so if you're not committed, don't bother.
Play any shows you can get
Phone round to try and get more shows - the more outings you get, even if the event isn't ideal for your type of music, the more confident you will feel on stage, the better you'll be at the next event.
Record a demo/EP
You probably know someone who has a recording studio near you. Get it done. You will find recognition much easier with promotional recordings.
Get yourself a proper website too
You think Myspace is fine? Think again. Myspace reeks of the "we do this just for fun" impression. get a website which is simple, beautiful and easy to navigate.
Don't do it yourself using Dreamweaver or Frontpage - look at something like Wordpress or get someone to manage Wordpress for you.

Howto install, configure and run Phenny and phenny-speak
"Foolproof" instructions to install and run Phenny and phenny-speak on Debian, Ubuntu and derivatives.
I've recently rediscovered Phenny, a modular python irc bot, written by Sean B. Palmer, as well as Noah Slater's previously unreleased "phenny-speak" module which uses markov chains to provide a source of amusement.
- Phenny is free software, licenced under the Eiffel Forum License 2
- "phenny speak" is free software, licenced under a very permissive BSD-like licence.

How to write a really simple IRC bot
Noah Slater of semtard vapourware fame recently demonstrated to me how to write and extremely simple IRC bot in shell scripting.
The bot below is extremely simple, it simply identifies itself, joins a channel then sends a message to a channel.

Getting my M6323 Generic Webcam to Work with GNU/Linux
Getting webcams to work with GNU/Linux is generally a complete nightmare, as a result of different chipsets in the same model, and some working in a vastly different way to others.
However, I was elated a few days ago when I found that my 8 pound, generic, bottom of the range, unbranded webcam worked with GNU/Linux.
I intend to outline I have no idea whether the details of how I got it working. This is is intended to be helpful to someone trying to set their M6323 webcam up or a different Generic webcam, so I'll try and go into as much detail as possible.
