Solo via ferrata is all about the head game

Solo Via Ferrata is head game.

Via Ferrata is like climbing. Or climbing scaffolding. Or something. I felt it was like lead climbing a grade 3 indoor route, but with much more exposure.

It’s a weird thing because you could say, “I’m clipped in, I’m totally safe” and that’s mostly true. But it’s also true that you take some of trad climbing’s “but do not fall” with you.

Falling on Via Ferrata whilst unlikely to be life changing could still be Very Unenjoyable, and would be something you’d prefer to avoid.

The Durance gorge has several Via Ferrata’s through it of different difficulties. This sweltering evening in the summer I sweated over two of them – but the final, 4 hour, black “hard” route I had to leave for another day.

Would you try Via Ferrata? What were your experiences of it?
