Slaley Sough 4/10 and Bonsall Lees Level 5/10. Two places I won’t be returning to for a while.
The trip was 8/10, but that’s just cos Jon was up for it.
Slaley Sough: a pointless venture where the old man dug tunnels for ages and ages whilst failing to find anything to mine. The most interesting feature is a big shaft (that goes nowhere) called the “Thundershaft” on account of what happens if you drop a stone down it. The type 2 fun part of the mine is getting to it. A 100m scramble up a 45° slope of moss, on clay, with brambles over the top is character building in ascent and descent.
Bonsall Lees Level is a short watery wade down a wide mined passage to see some nice little cascades. The water is just deep enough to go over your wellies.
I’ve a list of Peak District mines and caves I’m eager to visit – fancy joining us for some of the more fun ones? Link in bio
