What people imagine when you mention caving

Whenever you mention the word caving to someone, usually they instantly will reply that they’re too claustrophobic for that sort of thing.

And yet the same people will happily walk through doorways and corridors without blinking.

I think there is a difference between perception and reality.

If you’ve never climbed before, could you climb the Yosemite Half Dome? If you have climbed before, would you take a beginner up it for their first ever climb?

If you’ve never raced cars before, could you drive a Formula One car? Would you let a newbie into a F1?

Unless you’re very rich or very stupid, the answers to all these are probably no.

When The Caving Crew take people new to caving underground for the first time – managing fear is one of the most important things.

We start somewhere large and spacious. We have fun. We take it gently. The obstacles are avoidable and optional. We support and encourage each other.

As you can see in the photos – the size of the chamber in the Alderley Edge Copper Mines is about as big as the inside of a church, and whilst the traverse is undoubtedly challenging, it is completely optional and avoidable.

If you’ve never been caving, let us show you some of the largest chambers and the fun you can have in them! Link in bio 🙂
