Whitewater kayaking is sometimes hard

Whitewater kayaking is sometimes a hard sport to find the right conditions for.

The river levels need to be higher than average usually, but not too high. The right people need to be available. The river needs to be safe and known to not contain many hazards.

Usually this means you travel to meet the right people and kayak the known safeish rivers when the conditions are right.

This last lockdown changed all that.

“Meg’s Wave” below a friendly weir turned out to be our local wave. Named after (but not by) its discoverer, this is a park and play, eddy service wave without major hazards downstream.

Whilst the water levels do require rain, it is dam release so tends to be a bit more controlled than other nearby rivers.

And less than 5-10 mins from where I’m living – this was a welcome local surf wave in the sea of lockdown.
