Throwback to a summers day with long time Climbing Clan members, Rebecca and Kellie, helping them [re]start their first steps safely learning to lead Trad outside.
We gently looked at placing nuts – one of the most frequently used and most useful types of trad climbing protection – and a few other types of protection, before getting them to have a go “fake leading” a route whilst placing gear.
“Fake Leading” – where the climber is on a loose top rope, but also trails a “fake” lead rope behind them (also belayed for realism on this occasion) – allows a newbie trad climber to have lots of the safety, whilst also feeling the need for gear at the same time. It’s a fantastic training tool and I’m very grateful to the person who introduced me to it.
By the end of the session, they’d both taken some significant steps towards trad climbing routes for themselves. ‘º
