Assume nothing about your abilities

It’s often a mistake to assume you can’t do something, when that assumption is based on people at the top of their game.

If you watched a Grand Prix having never seen a four wheeled motor vehicle, you might say you could never drive like that.

And you might be right – you might not be able to drive like Lewis Hamilton.

But if you’re brave enough to take the time to learn with a driving instructor, you still are quite likely to be able to drive a Renault Clio to the shops.

You might be able to drive your Renault Clio and have quite a lot of fun from driving it.

So when you see people at the top of their game, pushing their limits, it’s right to say you might not be able to copy them, but wrong to assume you might not be able to do something similar.

Of course, there may be training, and that’s what these photos show – Dean, Matt and Alison with me and Judith being helped to get to grips with roped caving. First in pleasant conditions, then in fairly challenging conditions in p8.

A memorable induction!
