It is ok to talk about mental health

It’s ok to talk.

A few years ago, I was happy with life, and then my girlfriend unexpectedly broke up with me.

I was devastated. Heartbroken. Destroyed.

I was struggling to think about anything else, my work suffered, the rest of my life suffered, I fell and I fell hard.

Breakups are tough, but somehow this one went further for me.

I got support from a counselor who helped somewhat, and a distant friend – Lottie – stepped up and became a very close friend, offering support through some of the most challenging moments.

In a the middle of one flurry of tears, Lottie pointed out “isn’t it your birthday today?”. It was.

It was not a good birthday.

I expected these moments to pass, and they did, but whilst I expected them to subside in 8 weeks-ish, they were still was able to hijack my thoughts and cause upset and tears 2-3 years afterwards.

Now the water has flowed under this bridge, I can tell the story.

Sometimes we all go through absolutely rough times, and it’s the people who are there for us then who make all the difference.

Being able to share frustrations, tears with my counselor, Lottie and a number of other close friends and family made that extremely unpleasant time so much easier.

When things are tough, it’s ok to talk. — Lottie and I caught up for lunch a few months ago and it’s amazing to think how much better things are.

My birthday this year will be much better. ˜Š
