“Oh, that looks fun. I’ll climb that!”
A pleasant looking sea stack towered out of the same on the Hebridean beach.
Soon I was scrambling up, up, up the pinnacle.
As I went up, I realised I might have made a mistake. “Stornoway, we have a problem”.
Let’s call it “the cat problem”.
The cat problem is that no matter how easy or difficult something is to climb up, it’s harder to climb down.
An easy climb up, can be a ferocious descent.
And on this sea stack, the way up had been slightly challenging. I reached the top. How would the descent be?
In a 3: hard and scary. Finding footholds is much harder when they’re hidden from above. Hand holds aren’t in the right place or as positive as you’d want.
Eventually, after much more time, and much more focus – I stepped onto the sand, and wondered how if missed this simple lesson.
