Reaching the bottom of the most challenging caves is something you do with ropes “so is caving ropework a bit like climbing?” They’re very different. When climbing, you use the rope as safety device in case you fall. When caving, you use the rope as a way of moving vertically through places where climbing would be too difficult, if not impossible.
The best place to start to learn caving ropework (known as SRT – single rope technique) is above ground.
Earlier this year, The Caving Crew were lucky enough to be invited to this training location which allowed us to help more of our cavers gain skills and confidence going up and down the rope so they can put these skills to use underground in the future.
If you might be interested in trying this sort of thing, or you just want to see more about what we do, check out “The Caving Crew” group on Facebook.
